How to Be a Missionary 101

After years of being the missionary of our family, I’m excited to be entering a new season of global ministry with my husband. In July of 2025, we will be officially stepping down as the lead pastors of the church we pioneered nearly 40 years ago to do PHGN full-time. I was only 24 when we started the church, so this is a HUGE change! I’m so happy that we will still have a home with our church family and can continue to worship with them. These months between now and then feel a strange mixture of sadness and excitement as we leave the security of the past to enter a future that is a bit cloudy. What does God have planned for us; for PHGN in the coming years? We suspect it’s something more than we know because He is asking us to give our full effort to it at a time when most of our friends are retiring. So…

At the ages of 70 and 63 we are pioneering a new season of PHGN as full-time missionaries. What does this change mean to the ministry? There are so many things we’re praying and considering right now - how best to not only do the work, but to share it with others; how much we should fundraise and how much we should simply trust God…these are NOT easy questions! God has been doing a deep work in our hearts and we want to keep a simple focus as we move forward. We want to follow Jesus and join Him in what He’s doing. Whatever missions looks like for us in the future, our hearts desire is that it be free of pressure or manipulation. We don’t want this to be something WE do. We don’t want to build A ministry. We want ministry to be led, enabled, and empowered by our Jesus. We want to build His kingdom. We want to love Him and love people, bringing the gospel to them.

We will be using this blog as our communication connection with you about our lives, family, and PHGN more and more. If you take a good look at this website, you will find all of the information you need to know us and what we do. You’ll find clear opportunities to give or to join us as we follow Jesus. No pressure. No begging. No pestering. No guilting. Just, pure following Jesus together. We hope that will cause you to stay with us and keep coming back. We can’t wait to see how God plans to do missions with this soon-to-be retired pastor couple and their friends. :) Life is an amazing adventure with Jesus!
