The Value of One Smile

I think one of the most painful things for my heart - and perhaps the heart of God - is when I see children who have lost their smile. They have been so broken and traumatized or are so sick or hungry, afraid or angry that there is no joy left. They have no expectation of things being better. They have lost hope and are simply surviving as best they can. To be so young and so lost is heartbreaking.

Then, something happens.

A few weeks ago PHGN was able to send funding to help an orphanage in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It’s long been on my heart to help care for these orphans of war. I was given a virtual tour of their living conditions a few months ago. They live in a house without things we consider bare necessities, yet safer than on the streets. Some came from the nearby IDP camp. In the past few years many have lost their home, one or both of their parents, and seen images of war that you and I cannot imagine. They arrive malnourished and without hope. Some struggle with a will to live. Our ministry partner does his best to get them the medical care, food, and care they need. However, prices are higher than ever due to the war and the needs are endless.

Bunk beds were built. Blankets were purchased. Clothing was provided. Food filled their bellies. Two months of rent for the house was paid. Security. Peace. Signs that God sees them and cares. Hope that perhaps things CAN change. I received photos, receipts, and videos of the children being blessed. Still no smile…until…

In one of the videos I saw smiles burst from their little faces! They were showing me their new things and were piled upon one of the new bunkbeds. Suddenly, there it was! Joy. Sweet, child-like, hopeful, expectant, hesitant, yet beautiful joy! Watching the video, I thought, “I’m not sure there’s anything more valuable that we do.” After all…

What is the value of a smile to you?
